Confined Space Awareness Course (Ontario. Regulation 632/05)

Welcome to Confined Space Awareness Course

Welcome to your Confined Space Awareness Course—designed to help you recognize the hazards of working in or around confined spaces and understand the safety procedures that help prevent serious incidents.

This training is required under Ontario Regulation 632/05 and is an essential step in protecting yourself and others from the hidden dangers of confined spaces.

Hands-On Demonstration Requirement

While this course will provide you with the knowledge needed to recognize hazards and understand safe work practices, Ontario Regulation 632/05 also requires that employers ensure workers can physically demonstrate their competency in key confined space safety tasks.

Employers must verify that workers are able to:

  • Test the atmosphere using approved monitoring equipment.
  • Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and rescue gear, such as harnesses, lifelines, tripods, and ventilation systems.
  • Follow entry permits and emergency drills to ensure safe entry, exit, and response in the event of an incident.

This practical, hands-on component is critical for confirming that workers not only understand confined space hazards in theory, but also have the skills to safely perform their duties in real workplace conditions.

What You’ll Learn in This Course

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Define what a confined space is
Understand the key characteristics that make a space confined and why they require special precautions.

Identify common confined space hazards
Recognize atmospheric, physical, mechanical, and environmental risks that could lead to serious injury or death.

Understand the importance of hazard control
Learn how the hierarchy of controls is applied to confined spaces, including de-energization, ventilation, PPE, and more.

Explain the purpose of entry permits and pre-entry procedures
Know the steps to take before entry, including air monitoring, PPE inspection, and completing permits.

Appreciate the role of communication and rescue planning
Understand the responsibilities of standby attendants, the importance of clear communication, and emergency procedures.

Know your responsibilities under the law
Review the duties of employers, supervisors, and workers when confined space work is planned.

How the Course Works

This course includes interactive content, real-world examples, short quizzes, and a final knowledge evaluation. You can complete it at your own pace, and you’ll receive a certificate upon successful completion.
